Zizea aptera - Heartleaf Alexanders
Apiaceae Family - "Heartleaf Alexanders, Heart-leaved
Meadow Parsnip"
Zizea named in honor of German botanist, Johann Baptist Ziz and aptera from the Latin word for "having no wings". Grows from 1 to 3 feet tall with umbels of tiny, yellow flowers blooming from April through June. Similar to Z. aurea, but basal leaves are undivided and heart-shaped at base. Prefers drier prairies than Z. aurea. Although Z. aurea saw some medicinal uses, there are no uses cited for Z. aptera. |
