Acanthaceae Family - "Wild Petunia, Hairy Ruelia" Ruelia is in honor of French herbalist Jean de la Ruelle (1474 - 1537) and humilis comes from the Latin word meaning "low", referring to the low growth habit of this plant. Found throughout the western Tallgrass region, from open woods to moist prairies and sand plains. Pink to purple flowers from June to August. Can reach 2 feet but generally just about a foot tall. No medicinal or food uses reported for R. humilis. |
