Physostegia virginiana - False Dragonhead
Lamiaceae Family - "False Dragonhead, Dragon Head, Lion's Heart, Obedient Plant" Physostegia is from the Greek for "bladder covering" referring to the inflated appearance of the flowers. Virginiana means "of Virginia" referring to the location where it was first found and studied. Can grow to 4 feet tall under ideal conditions. Favorable conditions for P. virginiana are moist to wet woodlands along streambanks and in thickets. Typical square stem of the mint family with snapdragon-like flowers blooming pale pink from June to September. The flowers grow in vertical rows along the flower head. If they are pushed to one side or the other, they tend to remain in that position for some time...the reason for one of the common names of P. virginiana. Little to no medicinal use reported for this species. |
