Mitella diphylla - Mitrewort
Saxifragaceae Family - "Mitrewort, Coolwort, Current Leaf, Fairy Cup, False Sanicle, Fringe Cap, Bishop's cap Mitrewort" Mitella from the Greek mitra, diminuitive form meaning "little cap", possibly referring to the flower or the seed; diphylla is from the Latin word meaning "two leaves" because of the two opposite leaves (rarely three) halfway up the single flowering stem. Found in the cooler northeast portions of the tallgrass region on moist, richly organic soils of shady woods. Most commonly occurs on north-facing slopes. Blooms from April to early June. Although medicinal uses are noted in early history, native Americans or early settlers apparently did not make use of this plant as there are no North American uses cited. |
