Helianthus is from the Greek word helios meaning "sun" and anthos for "flower".

Large yellow flowers with dark purple centers bloom from August to October; can reach 7 feet tall. Fairly common to the Tallgrass Region, shows up sporadically farther east.

No medicinal or food uses reported.
