Desmanthus illinoensis - Illinois Bundleflower
Fabaceae Family - "Illinois Bundleflower, Illinois Acacia, Prairie Mimosa, Pickle-weed" Desmanthus from the Greek words desme, meaning "a bundle" and anthos, meaning "flower". Illinoensis meaning "of Illinois". Common, almost weedy in disturbed prairies, pastures and sandy thickets. Averages 3 feet but can reach 5 feet or more with ideal conditions. Blooms from June through August, most intensely in July. Illinois Bundleflower has long been considered a cure for just about any itch. Many of the Delphinium species have been cultivated as garden flowers for their foliage more than for the floral appeal. |
