Cassia (Chaemacrista) fasciculata - Partridge Pea

"Golden Cassia, Large-flowered Sensitive Pea, Prairie Senna, Senna Pea, Wild Sensitive Plant"

Chaemacrista from the Greek word meaning "low crest"; fasciculata from the Latin word meaning "grouped together in bundles", most likely referring to the drooping flower parts.

Prefers dry, sandy soils of the Tallgrass Region, especially along roadsides and other disturbed places. Bright yellow flowers bloom from July to September. Leaves fold when touched. Loves the sun!

Related species have been used medicinally, the drug senna comes from species native to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. There are no recorded medicinal uses by Native Americans or early settlers.

Leaves considered toxic to livestock by some authorities.
